A Hairy Deal

Dear Sadie,

I have heard that as you get older you shouldn't continue to wear long hair. Do you agree that there is a certain age that women should start wearing their hair shorter?

Great question! Honestly when I first read it I immediately thought "that's right, older women should NOT wear long hair"! But where did that thought come from? I think it came from my mother. She always told me that.

So, in thinking it through for myself, here is my opinion. Most women probably do look better with their hair shorter as they age. I'm not talking about everyone has to have a pixie, but often long hair can age you and make your face drawn out. However, I have several friends who carry off the long hair very well and I think they know when it's time to get a little shorter. And what is "older" anyway? I am talking in circles here!

For the most part, I would agree that shorter is better past 50ish?? Oh boy, I can see myself in trouble already. This blog may be shuttin' down! Here is a for sure no-no. If I see any of you looking like this I will personally get out the scissors!

Alright, there's my two cents, now it's time for you all to add yours...

I agree 100%...The picture you posted of the lady has the most horrific hair...It looks like it needs a good conditioner as well as about 8-10 inches cut off of it...Though don't get that "old lady helmet hair" cut...That is just as bad IMO :o)

I have to agree...for the most part, people generally look better with shorter hair as they age. There are, however, a very few exceptions. So, I guess I am saying, it depends on the person and the hair.

I think 40 is the new 30 so maybe the new rule should be ... no long hair after 50. I love my long hair and am in no rush to cut it. Of course *wink* I don't look my age! *laugh*

Good post. Good advise. *hugs*

So what do we consider long hair... past shoulder length or shorter than that... hmm just curious. I personally like shorter hair and usually grow mine out to cut it short again... WHY? don't ask... I LOVE change! =-)

Wait a minute, I thought 60 was the new 30! I'm 56 and I may have the helmet cut.....oh, dear! But I think that short hair over whatever age was put out there by hairstylists! I have quite a few friends "my age" who have long hair and look really good.

:) I love this blog!

Oh my...I am afraid my inner California hippie will be revealed with this post but here goes: I'm digging the whole earth mother, organic, wild look in this picture! I would LOVE to invite this lady over and show her what hair products could do for her though! And then invite her to stay for some organic chai tea and a salad picked from the yard. I will be 50 in November and have decided to go silver but am not planning to let my hair grow longer than it is right now (shoulder length and layered), but I'm also not planning to cut it short (very tempting right now to go pixie just to get rid of the color that remains). My husband likes the silver but has begged me NOT to cut it "old-lady short". I wonder what he'd think of this picture?

This is very interesting. I mean, it's odd but true that older women look better with shorter hair...older being past 50s. I'm wondering what style I'll have in 15 years...the spiking one probably. hehe
